About us

    Antigua and Barbuda Diabetes Association was established on February 9, 1986. The founding President Vivian James, was motivated by the need to provide support for persons living with diabetes to help them take better care of themselves and to avoid common complications especially amputations of which there was a high prevalence among persons living with diabetes. So together with other like-minded persons the Association was started.

Main Focus

  • To generate interest, commitment and action in the prevention and management of diabetes
  • To help persons living with diabetes and their family members to provide quality self-management and to better cope with the condition
  • To improve care, treatment and the quality of life for persons living with diabetes
  • To act as an advocate for persons living with diabetes and for those at risk of developing diabetes

Our activities:

    In partnership with the Ministry of Health, support from the Pan American Health Organization and several national stakeholders, a week of activities is usually organized in observation of World Diabetes Day. Activities include media programmes, education and screening in schools, workplaces and communities, seminars for healthcare workers and for persons living with diabetes and their families; walk for diabetes and distribution and sale of tags, pins and other promotional materials.

    The Association also supports education and screening programmes organized by other groups including the Ministry of Health, Nursing and Medical Schools and NGOs.
